Times Square Gym 1990
The building that housed this gym was being demolished to make way for the Conde Nast building. The old Times Square and 42nd Street was beginning to make way for the corporate take over that we now see today.
This was also the very last project I shot in B&W. Soon afterward I moved and had no space for a darkroom. I miss the process of film, along with the look and feel.
However I've fully embraced the advantages of digital technology and cannot imagine investing the time that was necessary to make beautiful B&W prints in a wet darkroom. The new Times Square unfortunately is not at all a replacement for the grit and grime of the old. Old vices have been replaced by greed and glitz.
Some new things are not necessarily better, just different.
