1991 Stella Wright Homes - Newark NJ
1991 Stella Wright Homes, Newark NJ
In March of 1991 I read an article in The New York Times about tenants who were hired to go into abandoned apartments in the Stella Wright Homes. The crew went into these apartments to clean them out so they could be renovated and made available to new families.

In these photos you can see the task that they had before them, and some of the tenants who lived in the buildings. One of the issues with these buildings is that they seemed to exist as a separate city within a city, with its own ecosystem of associations and understandings. I spoke to one young man who told me about working in downtown Newark, really just a few blocks away, and how out of place he felt there. It was difficult for him to understand how to be in the world outside of his home complex.
These buildings were torn down in 1999.
